Recognising the issues

Section 1

Recognising the issues

Let’s talk about work. Why does it dominate our lives so much? Why do we expect it to provide all the answers? Tim will start to change your perspective and stop using work as an excuse for not following your true course to contentment. Hear Tim’s story about working too hard and taking himself too seriously. Become honest about where you are before moving forward.

1.1 Tim's Story

In this first module, Tim introduces himself and gives more background on how and why he designed the course. Tim also encourages you to write things down as you go through the modules. As he says, take notes and make notes.

1.2 Burnout

This module starts to explore why we sometimes work too hard. Perhaps it is a need for recognition. Perhaps we end up working hard rather than smart. And perhaps some organisations encourage us to work too hard by rewarding the wrong behaviours.

1.3 The world of work

In this module, Tim starts to explore the world of work. Many people fall into a job or career and then carry on without really giving any more thought to it. Few people pause to check and reappraise whether the job actually suits them, challenges them, or uses their true skills and abilities.

1.4 Why do you work?

Are you happy in your job? Many people don’t find joy in their work yet they rarely admit that they’re stuck and frustrated. In this module, Tim explores why despite not finding contentment people continue to let work dominate their lives.

1.5 Postponing gratification

In this module, Tim explores the concept of deferred gratification where many people put off truly living for some other time in the future. Do they think that they are investing in a better future or are they frightened of living in the moment? And what are the downsides of postponing the important things in life?

1.6 Making choices

Life is all about making choices. Tim explains how realising that you can’t do everything at the same time and therefore having to make choices can be a hugely liberating experience.

1.7 Pause and reflect

In this final module of the first section, Tim talks about the importance of giving ourselves quality time to pause and reflect on our lives – what we really think and what we really feel.

“You only get one go at this life.
Make it count.”
