Anyone been listening to Radio 4’s book of the week? Now is the Winter of our Disconnect is a light-hearted account of one family’s attempt to live without all forms of electronic media. No Skype, Facebook, iPhones/pads/pods, and return to living in the RL (real world). It is worth dipping into. And if you thought that it was only a problem for the younger generation then count how many times you’re in a meeting with people who’re on their laptops/phones. The myth of multi-tasking is just that – a myth. You can no more concentrate on what’s being said and do your emails than your daughter can simultaneously do her homework whilst talking to her friends on Skype, MSN, and Facebook. Electronic communication channels may be fashionable but sometimes there’s no substitute for RL.
